Ex-Gay and Ex-Ex-Gay Conferences in My Own Back Yard
I’ve been ignoring this stuff, because I’ve been focused on the Godspell audition this week. But it turns out that some interesting stuff is going on right in Irvine, where I work: the Exodus Freedom Conference, for ex-gays or would be ex-gays, and the Beyond Ex-Gay conference, which presents a more skeptical take on the ex-gay movement. I kind of wish I could have checked these out, since they’re so close, but one can’t do everything, and for me this year trying for Godspell took priority. (Well, technically maybe I still could, since I think the one is still under way, and the other is beginning today, but it’s probably too last minute by now, and some back dental bills are waving their arms and begging for whatever the conference fee money would have been.) So, here’s a few words from some others:
Karen of Pursue God, a woman “fifteen years into my own journey through same-sex attraction,” checks out the Exodus conference, and finds hope (along with greater honesty than she’s previously seen about what’s meant by “change”).
Peterson Toscano, ex-gay survivor, creator of Doin’ Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House (which I need to see one of these days), and a fellow Quaker, writes about both conferences in Misinformation, Outright Lies and Our Response.

Friend! You can totally come to the Ex-Gay Survivor Conference. It only costs $40, but scholarships are available. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Also, the evening events (my show tonight and the concert/film forum tomorrow) are FREE and open to the public. Surely you can drag yourself away from Godspell prep for just a little while to meet up. Would be great to see you.

I can totally tear myself away from Godspell prep, now that I failed to get into the show
. Unfortunately, I’m just now seeing this comment as your show is starting, so I’ll miss you tonight, but Joel’s up for going with me tomorrow at least for the evening events, so I should be able to get there for at least a little while.
