Friday Random Ten: The “I Don’t Want to Hear Your Fantasies About My Dad’s Groupies” Edition

Watching the horserace blogs report on the tail end of the presidential race is a little weird. One day Obama and Clinton both seem to be making nice, a couple of days later there’s a post saying Clinton’s comparing the Florida/Michigan thing (where it looks pretty clear at this point that Florida and Michigan will get some sort of representation, though possibly docked some for going early) with Mugabe’s election antics in Zimbabwe, and now there’s a report that the two campaigns are engaged in “formal talks” about ending Clinton’s run and possibly giving her the vice presidential slot (the latter an outcome that another blog said yesterday had been absolutely rejected). Oh well, bargaining stances, possibly soon to change; we’ll all know which rumor is true within the next couple of weeks or so.

I don’t know whether my Mom was my Dad’s first (though, if I ever found out she was, I’d take that to mean that young Greek women of Dad’s generation didn’t get much alone time with him, rather than that Dad as a young man had a firm commitment to premarital chastity). I do know that I’d find it really creepy to buy a product based on fantasies of my Dad’s hot and promiscuous sex life prior to Mom. Icky ad campaign.

New Books About Missing Black Fathers: Newsweek: Interesting to me because it also talks about engaged black fathers.

La Lubu has a whole reading list of feminist-minded children’s books (hat tip to Daisy).

A sewing observation on the FLDS.

Of the random iTunes, I find “How Can I Keep From Singing” particularly comforting today, with its “When tyrants tremble sick with fear …” Pete Seeger, among others, used to do this song; when I went looking to see if I could find a Youtube of him doing it, I came across this Daily Kos diary about how Seeger defied the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. And, here’s a Youtube of Seeger and some others doing Careless Love:

  1. “When the Night Bird Sings” by Laurie Lewis
  2. “Ave Maria” by Dad
  3. “Escape from the Prison Planet” by Clutch
  4. “How Can I Keep From Singing?” by John McCutcheon
  5. “Learn Your Lessons Well” from Godspell
  6. “Che gelida manina” from La Boheme
  7. “Addio, senza rancor” from La Boheme
  8. “Red Vines” by Aimee Mann
  9. “Cut the Cake” by John McCutcheon
  10. “One” by Aimee Mann
