Sounds

In the months that I was being treated for cancer, the world became more muffled. My cell phone alarm was faint, even when I was in the same room, and words in movies were sometimes difficult to make out. I knew the problem. My ears tend to clog up with wax every so often, beyond my own ability to clean them, and I go to the doctor to get an ear lavage. While going through radiation and chemotherapy, though, and working at the same time, I had no energy for yet another doctor’s appointment, so I let the world get more muffled.

This week, being sufficiently recovered from my last chemotherapy appointment, I got my ears cleaned. Now the alarm sounds loud if I am in the same room, and can be heard from across the condo. The slamming of a car door is clear and crisp. My footsteps sound clearly as I walk around the house. The world is full of sound again.

Interesting how some of our senses can be preserved through relatively simple expedients. Your hearing is now better so as to enjoy the many joyful sounds of life. Failing vision from cataracts can be corrected and even better than original with implanted lenses. Not too may years ago, our ancestors did not have these opportunities.
